Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The barrel sample of the 2021 Pétalos was lower in alcohol than ever (13.5%), and the wine felt a bit reductive and needed time in the glass to open up. That’s not a bad sign in my book, and the wine was lighter, a little narrower (a bit the style of the year), with finesse and freshness (despite not having high acidity, but it’s the balance that makes it fresher), elegant and juicy, with very fine, chalky tannins. 2021 saw a good crop and, except for Las Lamas and La Faraona, volumes are similar, even a little more in Pétalos, because the early-harvested vineyards delivered very healthy grapes and there was no need to discard or sort the grapes, which was not the case in the vineyards that were harvested late. There will be some 280,000 bottles, and the 2021s might also have a shorter élevage.

Description
Pétalos del Bierzo is a young crianza red wine made by the Descendientes de J. Palacios winery from Mencía grapes from Bierzo, in the province of Castilla y León, located in the northwest of Spain.
This wine comes from vines aged between 40 and 90 years old, planted in goblet-trained vines at an altitude of 450 and 1,000 metres above sea level, with steep, rocky slate soils that bring out the best in the vineyards.
The grapes come from 5 municipalities, Corullón, Valtuille, Villadecanes, Parandones and Villafranca del Bierzo.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and the vineyards are worked in the traditional way. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in wooden vats and open stainless steel tanks.
After maceration for 30 days, malolactic fermentation takes place for 2 months in wooden vats and closed stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for 8 months in French oak barrels.
Taste
Pétalos del Bierzo is a wine dominated by fruity aromas with a touch of spices. It is intense, with an acidic flavour and a pleasant velvety sensation, very immediate, round and juicy.
A red wine with a sensation of smoothness that defines its name.
Pétalos del Bierzo is the most famous wine of the Descendientes de J. Palacios winery. It is a jovial wine with aromas that transmits all the nuances of Bierzo. It is really pleasant and drinkable.
It is the perfect accompaniment as a starter and with dishes such as Manchego cheese, red meat, white meat and Mediterranean cuisine.
